State-Sponsored Hackers Leverage AI for Covert Operations, Exposing Chinese Influence Campaign
Nation-state hackers from Russia, Iran, North Korea, and China are employing AI for basic operational tasks, according to recent disclosures. OpenAI revealed how government-linked groups attempted to exploit its platforms, with a notable case involving a Chinese influence campaign that was inadvertently exposed.
The campaign, which targeted Chinese dissidents abroad, involved hundreds of operators and thousands of fake social media accounts. Tactics included impersonating U.S. immigration officials to intimidate critics and forging legal documents to silence opposition. One operative's use of ChatGPT as a digital diary inadvertently exposed the network's activities.
Ben Nimmo, OpenAI's head of investigations, described the operation as industrialized harassment aimed at critics of the Chinese Communist Party. The campaign also fabricated obituaries and grave markers to spread false narratives about dissidents.
